Reading Fluency By Way of
Frequency Word Recognition

Although I do not advocate teaching older kids to read by whole language or sight words, there are some high frequency words that you will want to make sure your child knows by sight in order to ensure fluency while reading.

YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO INSTANTLY RECOGNIZE THESE WORDS

If your child does not recognize these words she will be unable to read smoothly. Her reading will be jerky as she stumbles over these common words and her mind will not be free to comprehend what she is reading.

Your Opinion Please

Is your Elementary
Aged Child Headed
for Reading Struggles!

This can lead to more problems, to include confidence issues.

YOU WILL NEED A LIST

The quickest way to get your child familiar with these words is with a word list.

The simplest available list that I have found comes from Jumbled StructureTM.

This is a good list.  It will serve you well.

It comes as a simple download and can also be connected with the other Jumbled Structure reading materials.

READING FLUENCY-A MORE DETAILED FREQUENCY LIST

If you want to take it up a notch and have one Reading Resource that contains even more materials and more lists, you will want to have:

"The Reading Teacher's Book Of Lists: Grades K-12, Fifth Edition",by Edward B. Fry PH.D and Jacqueline E. Kress ED.D.

This book is actually were the Jumbled StructureTM List is comprised from and according to the publishers, it is “The definitive reference for reading and literacy from kindergarten through college.1”

I would agree.

This book is chock full of information and lists that will grow with your child through the years.

It will simplify your homework time and give you the support to gain confidence to successfully take more control in your Afterschool Homeschool.

In List 16 of fifth edition you will find your high frequency words.  It goes all the way to the 1,000 most frequently used words!

NOTE: When researching frequency word lists, you will find a variety.

The fact is, everyone will use words differently.  They will also encounter different reading material and be exposed to different concentrations of words.

Choose to use a good list to help you make it to your goals in reading fluency.

You should consider getting them both.

Jumbled Structure for basic everyday training and "BOOK OF LISTS",for more practice.

REMEMBER, PHONICS STILL RULE

For best results, please teach the high frequency words with phonics whenever possible

Some high frequency words such as ‘one','two', 'to', and 'of’, and others are truly ‘sight’ words.

They simply don’t play by the rules.

Don’t worry,"The Reading Teacher's BOOK OF LISTS",has a list of these ‘unruly’, phonetically irregular words too.

All other words can be sounded out with phonics.

Please use phonics.

For more on why I suggest this please see Phonics vs Whole Language.
